Check out this wonderful article from the Hu-Friedy Blog regarding why dentists and hygienists take measurements of your gums. It is important here at Main Street Dental to get this done on a regular basis-usually at a yearly basis. The reason for this is two fold: 1-we can detect early signs of inflammation and disease 2-these early warning signs can be linked back to your overall health and well being ie-diabetes, heart disease, hypertension.
“…There are no ifs, ands, or buts – periodontal probing is the standard of care. You wouldn’t set off on your long road trip without making sure you have gas or without checking your tires. Likewise, you shouldn’t start treatment without first knowing your patient’s periodontal condition.”
Ask your dentist or provider about these key words: attachment loss, probing depths, bleeding, CEJ measurements, etc.
In healthy cases, there is no probingdepth below the CEJ.
Also, ask if you have any bleeding upon probing-another sign of disease or inflammation.
