American Dental Association Wants to Amend McCarran-Ferguson Act-what does this mean for dental patients?

Dr. Seth here, hope everyone’s Christmas and holiday was amazing. So there is some movement within the dental circles and government to amend an ACT that would allow dental insurance companies to compete with one another to provide more transparent costs to clients and dentists.

This would be great in my mind everyone. The reason, when there is transparency with costs and billing, more people are accountable to the revenue and overhead involved.  Sen Daines introduced this bill and if approved would start the process of transparent dental costs with insurance companies and providers.

Take a look at the ADA news article below.

The ADA News (12/19, Garvin) reports the U.S. Senate introduced a bill to amend the McCarran-Ferguson Act to allow “the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department to enforce federal antitrust laws against health insurance companies.” The legislation is “nearly identical to the House version of the bill, which the ADA strongly supported.” The ADA lauded the Senate for taking up the bill, with ADA President Dr. Jeffrey M. Cole saying, “If health insurance companies had to observe the antitrust laws when setting rates and designing coverage, they would have to compete more aggressively with each other for both individual customers and purchasers of large group policies.” In a December 19 email, “Montana Dental Association Executive Director Al Garver and the ADA thanked MDA leadership and Montana dentists for their support in getting a Senate version of McCarran-Ferguson reform introduced by Sen. Daines.”
